HOTP vs TOTP: What’s the Difference?
OTP hardware tokens are available in two standard OATH formats:
- Event-based (HOTP)
Generates a new code each time the button is pressed. The code remains valid until it is used. - Time-based (TOTP)
Generates codes that are valid for a limited time window (typically 30 or 60 seconds), after which a new code is required.
